Why do we Fast?
The goal of fasting is to draw nearer to God.
It's about eliminating distractions for a spiritual purpose and enables us to celebrate the goodness and mercy of God. It helps prepare our hearts for all the good things God desires to bring into our lives.
Fasting should present a level of challenge, but it is very important to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do.
Fasting typically involves setting aside food for a period of time to intentionally draw closer to God and create space for prayer.
One option to consider is the Daniel Fast, which is a fast that was modelled to us in the Bible, using only whole, plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes, while avoiding meat, dairy, refined sugar, and processed foods. See below for a suggested meal plan and recipes.
Practical Tips for a Successful Fast
Consider the power of a made-up mind
One of the greatest keys with fasting is to make a decision before we start how long we’ll fast for. Write your commitment down, tell others for accountability, and plan your diary well to avoid tempting situations and stick to your decision.
Decide to keep going
If you break your fast or forget you're fasting for a moment, don’t let that stop you. Just pick up from where you had your ‘pause’ moment and keep pressing into God.
Don't over-commit
A marathon runner can’t just turn up to the race without any training. It’s best to start with small runs to prepare the body. In the same way, we should start small with fasting – once we’ve succeeded at a one-day fast, the prospect of a three-day fast becomes far less daunting.
Prepare well in the kitchen
If you're doing the Daniel Fast, it’s a great idea to be well prepared in the kitchen before the fast begins. Prepare some meals in advance, particularly if you’re responsible for providing meals for your family. Or stock up on all the essential Daniel Fast foods so you can avoid the supermarkets on your fasting days.
Chat with your doctor before you fast
We recommend that you consult with your health professional before taking part in any fast; especially if you have a medical condition, take medication, are pregnant or nursing. Children and youth need to consult with their parents or caregivers if they are taking part. On completing the fast, don't rush back into eating the regular foods you ate before the fast, as it may cause some minor discomfort in your body.
